INPI Brazil Explores EU Trade Mark System through AL-INVEST Verde IPR Study Visit at the EUIPO

From 22 to 24 October 2025, the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), through the AL-INVEST Verde IPR project, hosted a high-level delegation at its headquarters in Alicante, Spain from the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) of Brazil led by its President. It marks the third visit of INPI to the EUIPO in the framework of AL-INVEST Verde IPR, following a study visit organized by the EU-funded project in July 2023 and one in April 2025.

The three-day programme combined policy dialogues with in-depth technical sessions and knowledge exchanges. The primary focus of the study visit was an in-depth examination of the EUIPO’s trade mark system, providing an opportunity to explore operational and procedural approaches in this area. The agenda also included continued discussions with the EUIPO’s Boards of Appeal aimed at identifying and evaluating best practices that could be adapted and implemented in Brazil.

Discussions covered the institutions’ latest developments and strategic objectives, as well as the progress of cooperation initiatives. Sessions focused on innovation in business operations, including AI-based forecasting and workload management, SME outreach, and the promotion of EU and Brazilian IPR systems. The programme also featured exchanges on Boards of Appeal practice, mediation and ADR services, governance and financial models, and the use of learning resources for IP professionals, providing a comprehensive overview of the offices’ respective approaches and future collaboration opportunities.

Over the course of the visit, the delegation also explored key areas of mutual interest such as AI governance and ethics, IP valuation, and benchmarking across IP offices. These discussions further strengthen the cooperation between the EU and INPI, highlighting common challenges and opportunities in supporting innovation and delivering efficient IP services.

The visit contributes to the project’s first expected result to strength the capacity of national and regional IP institutions in MERCOSUR countries, for more efficient and user-friendly IPR protection and enforcement systems. It also served as a platform to discuss future cooperation areas as well as collaborations under thematic IP alliances, building on a long-standing cooperation partnership developed over many years under both editions of the EU-funded project IP Key Latin America and continuously within the framework of AL-INVEST Verde IPR.
