The EUIPO showcases advances and achievements in Uruguay
The European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) and the National Directorate of Intellectual Property (DNPI) of the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Mining of Uruguay strengthened their intellectual property (IP) cooperation with a high-level event on 19 February in Montevideo, Uruguay. The event’s main objective was to showcase the advances and achievements in Uruguay of the AL-INVEST Verde IPR project implemented by the EUIPO, particularly those of the following four initiatives.
Development of a Professional Certification in Technology Transfer and Intellectual Property
The initiative’s results include designing a model curriculum and a certification programme aligned with international standards to strengthen the competencies of technology managers in universities, research centres, and small and medium-sized enterprises.
Presentation of the Updated Guidelines for Examination of Trade Marks
The publication of the updated trade mark Guidelines in November 2024, aligned with international standards and EU best practices, represents a key milestone to modernise the examination criteria, promoting transparency and efficiency in trade mark registration in Uruguay.
The EUIPO has vast experience drafting Guidelines for examination reflecting the EUIPOs trade mark and design practice. The EUIPO has employed this expertise to assist with drafting and revising guidelines in several countries, including in ASEAN and Latin-America itself, in the context of various EU-funded IP cooperation projects it has implemented over the years.
Compendium of Jurisprudence on Trade Mark Law: Participation of Uruguayan Judges
This initiative promotes the harmonisation and strengthening of trade mark law in the MERCOSUR countries and Chile. The compendium of key regional judicial decisions and EU best practices is an essential tool to train judges, improve the application of trade mark law and promote international judicial cooperation, aligning practices with the highest global standards.
IPO Digitalisation: Strengthening Intellectual Property Management through Innovation and Technology
Referring to a series of activities carried out under the AL-INVEST Verde DPI project focused on knowledge sharing and the use of advanced technological solutions to improve the IP management of national IP offices; workshops for IP officers; and integrating EUIPO flagship tools, some of which driven by artificial intelligence (AI), such as TMclass, TMview and DesignView.
The EUIPO is cooperating with many organizations, including national and regional IP Offices, EU institutions, and other strategic stakeholders, to share knowledge, exchange expertise, avoid duplication, and support the drive to innovation with AI solutions that are designed to be flexible, adaptable, and easy to share.
The event was attended by key stakeholders, including the Ambassador of the European Union in Uruguay and the Minister of Industry, Energy and Mining of Uruguay. The partnership between the EUIPO and the DNPI is expected to continue to drive progress in IP cooperation, promoting innovation, competitiveness and sustainable development in the region.
