Virtual workshop on Licensing of Plant Varieties for public institutions and small and medium-sized companies
On 12 December 2023, the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants and the Community Plant Variety Office will host an online workshop about the licensing of plant varieties.
The workshop will begin by introducing the importance of licensing protected plant varieties in the agriculture and research sectors. As a result, linear models and their relevance will be explored, and a discussion on creating spin-off companies as a means of commercialising plant varieties will be held.
Another part of the workshop will focus on establishing a Variety Protection Office, covering the legal steps and requirements, along with examples of best practices. Additionally, essential legal aspects of plant variety licensing agreements will be discussed, along with key considerations to ensure equitable agreements.
The workshop will also present successful cases of protection and licensing of plant varieties such as Embrapa Arroz y Frijoles (Brazil) and Pantanoso del Sauce (Uruguay).
The goal is to expand knowledge about the commercialisation of plant varieties protected by the Plant Variety Protection Office, benefitting those concerned in Latin America.
This workshop is inspired by the workshop held in 2022 which generated great interest in the field of plant varieties. There was a large turnout and the satisfaction surveys were very positive.
