Workshops on international trademark and design registration procedures for local business
The ARISE+ IPR team hosted a series of workshops in Indonesia, Lao PDR, Cambodia and Thailand on the Madrid system for the international registration of marks from 27 February to 5 March, to assist local businesses in taking advantage of the benefits the system offers. The workshop in Cambodia also included information on the Hague system for the international registration of designs. Each workshop featured the launch of a booklet for participants on local procedures and requirements.
The Madrid system for the international registration of marks offers a simple, convenient and cost-effective means to protect trademarks in up to 119 countries, using a single application in one language for multiple countries and paying one set of fees. Strict time limits on processing Madrid applications also means businesses can acquire overseas trademark protection considerably faster.
Similarly, the Hague system for designs provides a simple, convenient and cost-effective means to register up to 100 designs in up to 70 countries, using a single application in one language for multiple countries and paying one set of fees.
In short, both systems make it simpler for businesses to enter into new markets with the confidence that their IP rights are adequately protected, thereby encouraging investment and growth in the participating ASEAN Member States.
The ARISE+ IPR workshops covered the benefits of using the international system, registration procedures and requirements, and the national systems for protecting trademarks and designs.
