Myanmar IP officials and SMEs briefed on international IP practices

The ARISE+ IPR “Seminar on Protecting Brands, Inventions and Designs Overseas” for Myanmar IP officials and SME representatives was held in Mandalay on 11 December following the success of a similar seminar in Yangon in November.

ARISE+ IPR Project Leader Ignacio de Medrano Caballero discussed how SMEs can protect their IP assets internationally, including through the EU trademark (EUTM) and industrial design (RCD) systems.  He explained how the EUTM and RCD systems allow single registration for the entire EU territory, making it the most convenient and cost-effect way for businesses to protect their IP assets in all EU Member States.  The EUIPO and ASEAN online IP databases and tools were also demonstrated.

Deputy Director General and Head of the Intellectual Property Department Dr. Moe Moe Thwe outlined both the current and proposed IP protection systems in Myanmar.  The country is in the process of legislating new laws for trademarks, patents, industrial designs and copyright, which will be consistent with international IP frameworks. The new Trademark Law also provides for the protection of geographical indications.

It is anticipated that Myanmar will establish a new IP office and that the IP laws will create an accessible and efficient system of IP registration in the country, as well as new IP enforcement measures.
