EUIPO and ASEAN Partners Advance Regional Dialogue on IP-Backed Finance
The European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), through the EU-funded SCOPE-IPR project, contributed to advancing the regional dialogue on IP-Backed Finance through the forum “Fostering Innovation Through IP-Backed Finance”, held in Bangkok, Thailand, on 14 October 2026.
Organised in collaboration with the Department of Intellectual Property of Thailand and the Creative Economy Agency, the forum brought together heads and senior officials of ASEAN IP offices, the ASEAN Secretariat, government banks and financing institutions to discuss how intellectual property can be used as a financial and economic asset.
Building on previous SCOPE IPR work on IP valuation and financing, discussions focused on practical approaches to IP valuation, commercialisation and IP-backed finance. Participants exchanged experiences from ASEAN and the European Union and considered how these mechanisms could help businesses, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), improve access to finance and make greater economic use of their intangible assets.
Following the high-level roundtable held on 13 October in the context of the 2026 IMF-World Bank Group Annual Meetings, the forum also helped strengthen dialogue between the intellectual property and financial communities and connected regional discussions with the wider international dialogue on financing innovation.
The activity supported the ASEAN IPR Action Plan 2026-2030, particularly efforts to strengthen IP asset creation, management and commercialisation. Through SCOPE IPR, the EUIPO continues to work with ASEAN partners to develop practical approaches and regional cooperation on IP-backed finance.
