A Partnership Helping the Philippines Strengthen Geographical Indications
Geographical indications (GIs) are more than a form of intellectual property - they help preserve cultural heritage, support local communities and create economic opportunities.
Through a partnership with the SCOPE IPR, an EU-funded project implemented by the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) has strengthened the capabilities of businesses, micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), and other IP stakeholders through training, workshops and knowledge-sharing activities.

By sharing knowledge and experience, we build stronger institutions, create more opportunities and help ensure that the value of our local heritage benefits the communities that have preserved it for generations," said Atty. Teodoro C. Pascua, Director General, Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL).
A key milestone came in May 2026 with the first ASEAN Regional Geographical Indications Forum and Exhibition in Iloilo City. Organised with the support of EUIPO under SCOPE IPR, the event brought together representatives from ASEAN Member States, the European Union, international organisations, government agencies and producer groups to exchange practical approaches to strengthening GI systems.
The forum represented a significant step for the Philippines, which operationalised its GI registration system in 2022. It provided practical insights into post-registration management, including quality assurance, producer organisations, market recognition and the protection of registered GIs. A curated exhibition of GI products from the Philippines, ASEAN and the European Union also gave Filipino producers valuable exposure to regional and international best practices.
Beyond strengthening the Philippines' growing GI system, the forum demonstrated the value of regional cooperation. By bringing together governments, producers and development partners, it reinforced that successful GI systems are built through collaboration and shared experience.
As IPOPHL continues to strengthen its GI ecosystem, the knowledge and partnerships fostered together with the EUIPO and SCOPE IPR will help support local producers while contributing to greater recognition of ASEAN products in global markets.
