Plant variety protection: tool for sustainable development and food security

Running from August to November 2026, this activity aims to strengthen awareness and understanding of plant variety protection (PVP) as a key instrument for supporting sustainable agricultural development and food security in ASEAN Member States. It highlights the role of effective PVP systems and alignment with international standards, such as UPOV 1991, in promoting innovation in plant breeding, improving crop resilience and enhancing agricultural productivity, while ensuring efficient use of natural resources.

Aligned with Strategic Measure 1 of the ASEAN IPR Action Plan 2026-2030, the activity contributes to building a globally aligned and progressive ASEAN IP system. It will address common misconceptions about PVP by showcasing its benefits for food security, climate resilience, economic growth and technology transfer through public-private partnerships. Delivered with flexibility to accommodate the diverse needs of ASEAN Member States, the activity will involve consultation with requesting countries. These will include Cambodia and Thailand, prior to regional awareness-raising and technical support initiatives.
