Challenges in IPR Enforcement in Physical and Online Marketplaces

Scheduled for implementation between November and December 2025, this regional meeting brings together IP and enforcement officials, as well as private sector stakeholders, to explore the growing challenges in enforcing intellectual property rights in both physical and online marketplaces. As e-commerce and social media platforms increasingly become conduits for counterfeit trade, the activity will examine current enforcement gaps and propose practical mechanisms to reduce IPR infringement. It supports ASEAN’s commitment to building stronger linkages between IP Offices and enforcement and judicial agencies, in line with Strategic Goal 3 of the ASEAN IPR Action Plan and the ASEAN Regional Action Plan on IP Enforcement.

The meeting will provide a platform for open dialogue and cooperation among enforcement bodies, IP agencies, and representatives of affected industries. Despite the limited enforcement mandates of many ASEAN IP Offices, collaborative action with the private sector and enforcement authorities continues to be crucial in the fight against counterfeiting and online infringement. The discussions and recommendations arising from this meeting will inform future enforcement-focused activities under a progressive, phased approach as is outlined in ASEAN’s enforcement strategy. This activity may also be held back-to-back with a national enforcement event hosted by the ASEAN lead country on enforcement.
