Challenges and Best Practices in the Enforcement of Geographical Indications

As part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen Geographical Indication (GI) systems in Southeast Asia, the SCOPE IPR Project - implemented by the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) in collaboration with ASEAN - held a regional workshop in Siem Reap, Cambodia. The event brought together IP officials, experts, and stakeholders from across ASEAN to exchange experiences on enforcing GIs and identify best practices that support local producers and enhance the protection of GI products.

The workshop built on the momentum from previous activities, including a GI-focused initiative held in Lao PDR in December 2024. It addressed practical enforcement challenges faced by ASEAN Member States, focusing on improving legal frameworks, promoting inter-agency cooperation, and increasing awareness among producers and consumers. Participants also explored ways to better integrate GIs into national development strategies to promote rural economies and preserve traditional knowledge.

The workshop highlighted the EUIPO’s upcoming role as the registration authority for craft and industrial GIs from 1 December 2025, underscoring the EU’s long-term commitment to supporting GI protection globally.
