Support in drafting modernised IP legislation
Modernising IP laws to adapt to the fast-changing business environment and aligning them with international standards has become crucial for most CARIFORUM countries. In its new phase, the CarIPI project will continue to provide support for the legal drafting and quality review of IP legislation to countries undertaking legal reforms concerning any type of IP.
The technical assistance provided by CarIPI during the first project contributed to the adoption of new industrial design laws in Suriname (after a review by the State Council, the concept law on industrial designs will be submitted to the newly appointed parliament) and Saint Kitts and Nevis (passed in August 2025). Additionally, the project collaborated with the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV) and the Community Plant Variety Office (CPVO) to support the Dominican Republic and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines in establishing plant variety frameworks. Regarding geographical indications (GIs), CarIPI provided a GI Model Law, which has been used by various CARIFORUM countries in the process of modernising their GI system.
