New publication: the Hague System in Suriname

In an effort to keep strengthening the intellectual property rights (IPR) environment in Suriname that fosters innovation, trade and investment in the region, the CARIFORUM Intellectual Property Rights and Innovation (CarIPI) project has just released a new practical guide on the Hague System in Suriname.

In close collaboration with the Bureau of Intellectual Property of Suriname (BIE) and supported by the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), CarIPI published the booklet in Dutch language, “HET HAAGS SYSTEEM - Surinaamse modellen  naar de wereld brengen”.

This 69-page publication was officially launched on 15 May 2023, during a high level event on the Hague Agreement for the International Registration of Designs held in Paramaribo, Suriname organised jointly by CarIPI and BIE. The aim of the guide is to help designers and entrepreneurs in Suriname get a clear understanding of the Hague System and its exponential benefits.

On 10 June 2020, Suriname deposited its instrument of accession to the Geneva Act of the Hague Agreement Concerning the International Registration of Industrial Designs (so-called “Geneva Act”). This system allows securing design protection simultaneously in multiple countries or regions through one international application, in one language with one set of fees. The Hague System is expanding and currently counts with 77 contracting parties (including the European Union) covering 95 countries.

If you are a Suriname national or have a domicile, residence or industrial or commercial establishment in Suriname, you can seek industrial design protection in up to 95 countries, including Suriname, through the Hague System.
