Technical assistance on the pre-accession and post-accession implementation of Geneva Act of Lisbon Agreement

The Geneva Act of the Lisbon Agreement on Appellations of Origin and Geographical Indications (the Geneva Act) was adopted on 20 May 2015. It modernises and updates the 1958 Lisbon Agreement. The Geneva Act entered into force on February 26, 2020, following the accession of the European Union. As of April 2022, there are 38 contracting parties of the Geneva Act, covering up to 57 countries. The Geneva Act introduces new features including the coverage of protection for all categories of products and offers protection against any usurpation or imitation. Under the previous Annual Work Plan (AWP), ARISE+ IPR provided technical assistance to interested ASEAN Member States (AMS) in the pre-accession preparation to join the Geneva Act.

Under the current AWP, ARISE+ IPR will continue to provide technical assistance on the post-accession implementation of the Geneva Act by organising a 2-day training event on 12-13 December 2022. The event will be for AMS who are currently contracting members of the Geneva Act, as well as AMS who might be interested in joining the Geneva Act in the near future. The event will highlight key features and procedures of the Geneva Act, the roles of WIPO, and the role of an IP office as a contracting party in implementing the Geneva Act.
