Awareness raising workshop on geographical indications – with stakeholders from Grenada

On 22 March 2023, CarIPI collaborated with the Grenada IP office (CAIPO) to host an online session on geographical indications with interested producer organisations in the country. The producers attending this session included Grenada Cooperative Nutmeg Association, Grenada Cocoa Association, Soursop Marketing and National Importing Board, Grenada Beekeepers Association, Grenada Rum Producers Association, River Antoine Estate producer of River Antoine Rum, and Cane Co producers of Renegade Rum, among others.

The aim of the session was to raise awareness on the various IP tools available to protect origin-linked products, with a particular focus on geographical indications, and to share information on the assistance that the project can provide through its Mentorship Programme. With the objective of enhancing the competitiveness of unique products (agricultural and non-agricultural) from the region, the Programme provides technical assistance in developing business strategies based on IP rights.

On the same occasion, the CarIPI team also presented the GI manual, developed by the project to guide producers or producer groups, control bodies, and IP offices on how to develop and implement codes of practice and controls, and register geographical indications in the CARIFORUM region.
