Publication of IP Guide for Brazilian exporters

The National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) of Brazil and EUIPO (through the AL-INVEST Verde IPR project) have released the ‘Intellectual Property Guide for Exporters – European Union’ (EU) to support Brazilian exporters with intellectual property (IP) protection in the EU. The Guide is part of INPI Brazil’s ‘IP Guides for Exporters’ series and was prepared by INPI with the technical collaboration of experts of the EU-funded project AL-INVEST Verde IPR implemented by the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO).

Practical guidance for Brazilian exporters

Divided into three parts, the Guide offers general information on IP; presents the EU’s IP system and how to protect IP assets when exporting to the EU; and provides guidance on what to do in cases of IP infringement. It explains the functioning of the EU’s centralised IP systems for the IP rights trade marks, designs and geographical indications for craft and industrial products managed by the EUIPO, plant varieties, outlines the regional patent system and also touches upon copyright.

Additionally, the Guide includes a practical checklist for exporters covering the key steps to take before entering foreign markets, from understanding IP and protecting it at home, to planning strategically and verifying existing rights abroad. The publication also summarises common IP pitfalls to avoid, such as neglecting prior searches or exporting before registering IP in the target market. It offers clear and practical guidance to help Brazilian SMEs and entrepreneurs confidently navigate IP challenges and make the most of export opportunities to the European Union.

Supporting horizontal EU goals

The Guide contributes to objectives of the AL-INVEST Verde programme by:

  • Improving SME uptake of IP protection in the EU, with step-by-step guidance that helps businesses avoid costly mistakes and file correctly from the start;
  • Enhancing EU–Brazil cooperation and visibility through joint technical work and alignment with international IP terminology and standards.

The ‘Intellectual Property Guide for Exporters – European Union’ is available for free download on INPI’s and AL-INVEST Verde IPR’s websites.
