Supporting the Promotion and Strengthening of Geographical Indications from the Amazon Region at the ‘Origens Brasileiras 2024’ event

The European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), through the EU-funded project AL-INVEST Verde IPR, will participate in the “Origens Brasileiras 2024”. The event is organised by the Brazilian Micro and Small Business Support Service (SEBRAE), a platform which aims to provide the public with a broad understanding of the importance of geographical indications (GIs) for the economy and for small businesses that make products from recognised territories, focusing on tradition, culture and biodiversity.

AL-INVEST Verde IPR’s participation in the event aims to increase promotion of the GI system and highlight its potential as a tool for local rural development. In addition, it aims to strengthen the strategic value of differentiated products from the Amazon, to support biodiverse and sustainable agriculture.

The participation consists of three elements:

  1. Showcasing Best Practices: highlighting the best practices of the European Union (EU) and regional GIs, demonstrating how these practices have been successfully implemented to create value and sustain local traditions and economies.
  2. Providing Expertise on GI Development: bringing in experts from the EU and Latin America to share their insights and knowledge on the development and strategic use of GIs. This expertise will enhance understanding and application of GIs among diverse stakeholders.
  3. Showcasing the Evolution of the ALINVmentor Program: presenting the progress and success stories of the ALINVmentor program, emphasising its role in mentoring and supporting GI producers and stakeholders.

By integrating these elements, AL-INVEST Verde IPR will significantly contribute to the ‘Origens Brasileiras 2024’ event. This aligns with the European Union's objectives of promoting sustainable development and intellectual property management, supporting local producers, while also aligning with broader global sustainability and economic development goals.
