Technology and Knowledge Transfer Training Programme developed in Uruguay

The European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) has developed competency certifications and training courses for professionals in Technology Transfer (TT) and intellectual property (IP) in Uruguay to boost the country's technological development and innovation. The initiative was carried out in the context of the EU-funded project AL-INVEST Verde IPR.

In Uruguay, the technology transfer (TT) system needs to reinforce its solid foundation with trained professionals and policies that promote TT and IP. The country's strengths include increasing investment in science and technology as well as high-quality research.

Developed with the support of the National Directorate for Industrial Property (DNPI) in Uruguay, the comprehensive training programme is structured into seven units. Each unit covers different topics, including innovation and technology, technology business and financing, intellectual property, project management, contracts and licensing, communication and negotiation and the management of innovation and TT in Latin America.

Its main objective is to equip professionals with the core competencies needed to manage TT effectively, including in relation to intellectual property and other intangible assets, in line with international standards. The expository-interrogative method is employed, utilising practice dynamics and collaborative work to create a space for the exchange of experiences and analysis of concrete TT case scenarios.

The curricula is particularly aimed at professionals in research institutions, universities, government agencies, and industry associations and chambers in Uruguay that primarily focus on science, technology, innovation, and intellectual property.

The EUIPO's work in international IP cooperation is exemplified by the development of this training programme that facilitates knowledge sharing and the exchange of expertise to further innovation in the global IP landscape.
