Recognition of GI Status in Argentina for two origin-linked products featured in GI mentorship initiative run by the EUIPO in MERCOSUR countries

The European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) acknowledges a significant milestone reached for two Argentinian origin-linked products featured in the AL-INVmentor mentorship programme: Té Argentino, Argentine tea from the province of Misiones and Northeast of Corrientes, and Miel de flores de Atamisqui, honey from the Atamisqui flower from Santiago del Estero.

On 26/12/2024 both Té Argentino and Miel de flores de Atamisqui were officially recognised as protected geographical indications (GIs) by Argentina's Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, marking a significant milestone for the producers and the regions.

The associations producing these products participate in the AL-INVmentor mentorship programme on GIs, an initiative of the EU-funded intellectual property (IP) cooperation project AL-INVEST Verde IPR implemented by the EUIPO.

With AL-INVmentor, these producers receive mentorship session consisting of tailored modules about collective strategy and branding, product specifications, governance, control mechanisms and sustainability. These benefits achieved through AL-INVmentor, combined with the recognition with GI status, significantly strengthen the market position and competitive advantage of both products.

Té Argentino from the province of Misiones and the Northeast Corrientes boasts a mild, sweet taste and clarity in cold infusions. Its quality is a result of the area's subtropical climate, fertile soils, and traditional harvesting techniques.

Miel de flores de Atamisqui originates from Santiago del Estero in the Gran Chaco region is a monofloral honey renowned for its sweet, delicate flavour and medicinal properties. Its light amber colour and floral notes are derived from the nectar of the flowers of the Atamisqui plant, a native species to that region.

AL-INVmentor combines virtual and face-to-face sessions to enhance the understanding and application of GIs as a tool for sustainable development. Through a collaboration between the EUIPO and national institutions like Argentina’s Secretariat of Agriculture, the initiative helps products meet global market standards while preserving their authenticity and cultural heritage.

The EUIPO is an international GI registration authority that builds on decades of expertise leading the EU’s international cooperation activities on IP rights, including geographical indications. The EUIPO was recently entrusted with managing the registration of craft and industrial GIs at EU level. The first applications can be filed from 1 December 2025.
