Regional Plant Variety System webinar
On 28 September CarIPI hosted a webinar in collaboration with CPVO, UPOV and CARICOM Agricultural Division on a Regional Plant Variety System. The aim of the webinar was to increase awareness of the importance of plant variety protection to promote plant breeding activities in the region. The need for efficient systems for granting registration of plant variety rights was also addressed.
Plant breeding plays a pivotal role in the development of innovative solutions in the field of plant health, quality products and climate change issues. Therefore, reviving the plant breeding sector in the Caribbean region, supported by an efficient system of plant variety rights, would favor not only internal trade among CARIFORUM States, but would also enhance trade possibilities, especially with the EU, which remains the main destination for exports from the region in agricultural goods. The benefits would be shared by breeders, farmers and society at large.
