EUIPO and JPO launch Welcome Kits to guide SMEs on trade mark protection in the EU and Japan
The European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) and the Japan Patent Office (JPO), within the framework of the EU–Japan Intellectual Property Action (EU–Japan IPA) project, published two “Welcome Kits” to help European and Japanese small and medium‑sized enterprises (SMEs) understand trade mark protection systems in the EU and Japan.
They include user‑friendly resources such as pre‑filing checklists, step‑by‑step application guidance, and explanations of core concepts such as distinctiveness, designation of goods and services, and search for prior rights. They also highlight the similarities and differences between the EUIPO and JPO examination approaches, as well as practical tools and references to official guidelines. The initiative seeks to improve SME’s understanding of foreign trade mark systems, enhance collaboration with local representatives, and support more effective international trade mark filing strategies.
