Draft law amendments on trade marks and designs finalised

The EU-Georgia Intellectual Property Project (EUGIPP) has been supporting the National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia (Sakpatenti) to develop amendments to the law on trade marks and designs in line with EU legislation. IP experts spent several months working in close collaboration with Sakpatenti to draft the amendments. These have now been completed and translated into Georgian.

As a first step, the experts drafted a comparative study to identify and address the discrepancies between the EU and Georgian trade mark and design legislations. Afterwards, based on the study’s conclusions, they drew up a list of propose amendments to the current legislation.

These draft amendments for trade mark and design legislation are an important project milestone. Once adopted by the Georgian government, they will strengthen the legislative frameworks for protecting trade marks and designs in Georgia and will improve the quality of IP administration services. Moreover, they directly contribute to the EUGIPP’s overall objective to support Georgian authorities in their efforts to further align with European standards.
