Webinar EU Inter Partes Opposition vs. Japanese Practice

The European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), within the framework of the EU–Japan Intellectual Property Action (EU–Japan IPA), organised the webinar EU Inter Partes Opposition vs. Japanese Practice, held on 2 October 2026.

The session provided participants with a comparative overview of opposition procedures in the European Union and Japan, highlighting key procedural stages, timelines and practical considerations relevant to trade mark owners, applicants and IP practitioners operating across both jurisdictions.

During the webinar, experts examined the EU inter partes opposition system and compared it with Japanese practice, offering insights into strategic considerations before and after trade mark registration. Particular attention was given to risk assessment, filing strategies and the importance of monitoring third-party applications to safeguard intellectual property rights. By fostering exchanges on procedural similarities and differences between the two systems, the activity supported a better understanding of trade mark protection mechanisms and contributed to strengthening IP knowledge among stakeholders engaged in EU–Japan business activities.
