Angola and Zambia join TMclass

As of 19 December 2022, the Angolan Institute of Industrial Property (IAPI) and the Patents and Companies Registration Agency of Zambia (PACRA) will use and accept the terms from the alphabetical list of Nice and the harmonised database of goods and services (HDB) in TMclass respectively.

Following PACRA’s decision to use the HDB, there are now 29 IP offices outside the EU that use and accept terms from this database.

São Tomé and Príncipe will use HDB

As of 12 December 2022, the National Service of Intellectual Property and Quality of São Tomé and Príncipe (SENAPIQ-STP) will use and accept the list of terms from the harmonised database of goods and services (HDB) in TMclass.

Following the decision of SENAPIQ-STP to use the HDB, there are now 28 IP offices outside the EU that use and accept terms from this database.

The new incorporation of SENAPIQ-STP in TMclass brings the total number of participating national and regional IP offices, including ARIPO, OAPI, WIPO and the EUIPO, to 92.

AfrIPI assists North African countries in fight against counterfeiting

On 28 and 29 November 2022, AfrIPI co-hosted its first on-site event in Algeria to support North African countries in the fight against counterfeiting, to promote intellectual property rights (IPRs) and to discuss their impact on the economy and the environment. The event took place at the Golden Tulip Hotel in Algiers.

AfrIPI participates in the OAPI 62 Administrative Council in Douala (Cameroon)

On 8 October, in Douala (Cameroon), the EUIPO & AfrIPI took part in the 62nd session of the Administrative Council of the African Intellectual Property Organization (OAPI). The session featured exchanges on the different challenges facing intellectual property. Several Government Ministers from the OAPI Member States also attended. The event included a discussion on the challenges of IP linked to the industrial politics of the African states.

On 6 and 7 December 2022, AfrIPI, in partnership with the European Patent Office (EPO) and the African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO), organised a hybrid seminar titled PATLIB Seminar: IP awareness sessions on patents and innovation for Africa at the ARIPO headquarters in Harare, Zimbabwe

Egypt joins DESIGNview

As of 31 October 2022, Internal Trade Development Authority of Egypt (ITDA) has made its designs available to the DESIGNview search tools. With ITDA on board, DESIGNview now contains data from 76 participating offices.

With the addition of more than 9.000 industrial designs from ITDA, DESIGNview now provides information and access to more than 19,9 million designs in total.

Since the introduction of DESIGNview on 19 November 2012, the tool has served almost 7,6 million searches from 163 different countries, with the US, Germany and the UK among the most frequent users.

Algiers, Algeria

International seminar on anti-counterfeiting and intellectual property and their impact on the economy and the environment

AfrIPI co-hosted its first on-site event in Algeria on 28 - 29 November 2022, to support North African countries in the fight against counterfeiting, to promote intellectual property rights (IPRs) and to discuss their impact on the economy and the environment. The event was organised in collaboration with Cabinet MAP, Institut de la propriété industrielle (INPI) de France, the Algerian-French Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI algéro-française) and Union des fabricants (UNIFAB, France).
