Nigeria: National Conference on Geographical Indications 17-18 February

On 17 and 18 February 2022, the Intellectual Property Rights and Innovation Project in Africa (AfrIPI), in partnership with the Africa International Trade and Commerce Research (AITCR) and the IP First Group, hosted The National Conference on Creating Legal and Institutional Frameworks for Geographical Indications. The conference was in Nigeria at the Hilton-Transcorp in Abuja.

This conference was a groundbreaking event, paving the way for national legislation on geographical indications (GIs). Why is this so necessary?

AfrIPI contributes to the workshop "Women agri-food business in Africa and Europe: benefits in the economy and the sustainable development by promoting the GIs as best practices” at EABF22

During the EU-Africa Business Forum (EABF22), Deputy Team Leader of AfrIPI Gregor Schneider, will talk on: "The EU Strategy for Geographical Indications and cooperation activities for their promotion in Africa - the AfrIPI project activities". Focus will be on Women agri-food business in Africa and Europe, benefits in the economy, sustainable development, and GI best practices.

The workshop is organized by the National Chamber Network of Women Entrepreneurs of Greece and will take place on Friday, 18 February 2022, 10:00-11:30 (CET).

Consultative roundtable on enforcement of IPR for North African countries

A consultative roundtable on the enforcement of IPR for North African countries was held on the 23rd – 24th of February 2022. In a working session on 17 December 2021, AfrIPI and OAPI reviewed their 2021 activities and 2022 work plan. The meeting enabled both organisations to get an overview of important projects, evaluate the areas of work covered since the beginning of their partnership and analyse their actions critically. consider future joint actions and projects, as presented in the 2022 Annual Work Plan.

AfrIPI engages at the 7th edition of the EU-Africa Business Forum

The EU-Africa Business Forum 2022 (EABF22) took place from 14 to 18 February. This important event allowed public-private dialogue between the EU and Africa at continental level. It aimed to increase opportunities for sustainable economic cooperation.

This 7th edition brought together African and EU businesses and public leaders from a range of organisations. It included several presentations and discussions on how to improve the investment climate and increase sustainable economic cooperation opportunities.

Technical support for the development of the legal framework for GIs in other countries

On 17 and 18 February 2022, the National Conference on Creating Legal and Institutional Framework for Geographical Indications in Nigeria was held. It was hosted by the European Union, AfrIPI, the Nigerian Trade Mark Registry under the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, and the Africa International Trade & Commerce Research organisation. The event was hybrid and took place in Abuja, Nigeria.
