Geographical indications: promoting heritage and rural development
This activity, implemented in November 2026, focuses on strengthening the role of geographical indications (GIs) in supporting heritage preservation and rural development across ASEAN Member States. Its purpose is to better protect and enforce both agricultural and non-agricultural GIs by enhancing the capacity of IP officials and relevant stakeholders. Additionally, it will explore strategies to increase the value and marketability of GI products. The activity highlights the importance of GIs as a tool for sustainable rural development and inclusive economic growth.
Aligned with Strategic Measure 5 of the ASEAN IPR Action Plan 2026-2030, the activity supports initiatives to identify and leverage opportunities in sustainable development through IP. It will bring together IP officials, producers and GI stakeholders from ASEAN, the EU and other regions to exchange experiences and best practices. This will include a study visit and engagement with EUIPO activities in Alicante, Spain. Discussions will explore the transition from manual to digital systems for traceability, monitoring and control so as to improve efficiency, transparency and cost-effectiveness across the GI value chain.
