CarIPI Project Supports Caribbean Representation at International GI Conference in Alicante
On 5–6 November 2026, the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) hosted the International Conference on Strengthening Geographical Indication (GI) Cooperation Projects at its premises in Alicante. The event, organised by oriGIn and Origen España, brought together international intellectual property stakeholders to discuss two decades of progress and shape the future of global GI cooperation.
In the context of the EU-funded CarIPI project, EUIPO supported the participation of Pan Trinbago, the official world governing body for the Trinidad and Tobago steelpan movement. Ms. Denise L.J. Hernandez, Secretary at Pan Trinbago contributed to the topic: ‘Specific needs of the craft and industrial GI sector’, examining critical aspects of governance, protection, control systems, and market development. The panel highlighted how craft and industrial geographical indications support regional development, employment, and cultural heritage preservation.
In addition, the CarIPI project showcased practical mentorship models and knowledge transfer across CARIFORUM countries featuring insights from Musical Instruments of Trinidad and Tobago Director Business Development, Akua Leith, and Saint Lucia Rum GI representatives Lennox Wilson and Ana-Lissa Jack, Deputy Registrar at the Registry of Companies and Intellectual Property (ROCIP).
Through its technical assistance and training activities, the EUIPO, via CarIPI, strengthens the capacity of Caribbean MSMEs/SMEs to create, manage, commercialise, and enforce their intellectual property rights. By facilitating Caribbean representation at this global event, the EUIPO demonstrates its commitment to fostering international dialogue, supporting local producer groups, and creating a predictable, fair business environment for intellectual property users worldwide.
