IPR Conference 2024: Intellectual Property Rights in the Digital Environment

On 11 November, the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) together with the European Chamber of Commerce in Korea (ECCK) and the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO), the most innovative IP offices in the world, co-organised the ‘IPR Conference 2024: IPR in the Digital Environment’, in the context of the EU-Republic of Korea Intellectual Property Action (EU-RoK IP Action).

The event was inaugurated by Her Excellency María Castillo Fernández, Ambassador of the European Union to the Republic of Korea; Mr Wan Ki Kim, Commissioner of KIPO; and by Mr Philippe VAN HOOF, Chairperson of the ECCK.

The conference featured presentations from businesses, professionals and academia from Europe and Korea, including Qualcomm, Coupang, Bae, Kim and Lee, FAiKERZ, the EU Delegation to Korea, the KIPO, the EUIPO, and Interpol.

Participants from both private and public sectors were provided with contributions on the challenges and opportunities for intellectual property (IP) in the digital era. The first session focused on the latest developments in digital intellectual property rights (IPRs) in the EU and Korea, including the latest technological advancements and the related challenges and the evolution of legal provisions regulating the digital world. The second session explored the collaboration among authorities, rights holders and online platforms to protect IP. A final session addressed using emerging technologies to support IPR enforcement online.

The IPR Conference 2024 provided a platform for discussion between the private and public sectors of Korea and the EU. With the participation of KIPO and the EUIPO, the conference offered insights into a spectrum of perspectives on the impact of IPR in the digital world.

Technological advancement and the digital transformation of operations has been of great importance to the EUIPO for decades and lead to being recognized by the World Trademark Review (WTR) as the most innovative intellectual property (IP) office globally in 2024, the fifth time the EUIPO received this recognition.
