Support to the maintenance and update of ASEAN TMview, ASEAN DesignView and IT training for officials from Cambodia and Lao PDR

On 3-4 December 2019, ARISE+ IPR organised two events in Alicante, Spain, at the premises of the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). Both events aimed to help the ASEAN intellectual property offices maintain and update the regional IP databases — ASEAN TMview and ASEAN DesignView — and help IT officials from Cambodia and Lao PDR improve their skills in using these IT tools.

On this occasion, IT experts offered training to the IT officials from 7 ASEAN IP Offices and supported the lead offices of these regional databases, namely the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) and the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO). The training focused on the Amazon Web Services (AWS), which is the infrastructure upon which the ASEAN IP Tools is built. The IT representatives have learned about the practical use, maintenance and navigation of the AWS. The training also concentrated on the security, maintenance and effectiveness of the tools, and the importance of having the services regularly updated and available online.

Moreover, there were also sessions on the development of AWS, Java and Linux skills, and discussions on the possible improvement of the ASEAN IT Tools and on how the EUIPO flagship tools may be updated. These activities have helped ensure the sustainability of the tools and procedures that address technical and content-related issues.

In the meantime, officials from Cambodia and Lao PDR received IT training. A goal existed to support IT experts in assessing the technical skills of IT officials from the Department of Intellectual Property of Cambodia and the Department of Intellectual Property of Lao PDR, improve the officials’ efficiency in utilising the databases, and encourage them to transfer their knowledge to other colleagues in the respective IP offices.
