COP16: Leveraging Geographical Indications for Sustainable Agri-Food Value Chains

The European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), together with the other implementing partners of the AL-INVEST Verde programme, will support the EU’s contribution to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in Cali, Colombia during the 16th Conference of the Parties (COP16).  This activity takes place in the context of the EU-funded IP cooperation project AL-INVEST Verde IPR or Component 3 the AL-INVEST Verde Programme.

The partners include the development organization sequa for Component 1, and both the International Italo-Latin American Organisation (IIlLA) and the International and Ibero-American Foundation for Public Administration and Policy (FIAPP) for Component 2.

The objectives of the EU-Funded Programme AL-INVEST Verde include promoting sustainable growth and job creation in Latin America by facilitating the transition to a low-carbon, resource-efficient economy. The programme comprises three components: Component 1 supports SMEs in Latin-America, Component 2 aids public institutions in the region, and Component 3 focuses on enhancing the use and effectiveness of intellectual property rights (IPRs) in the region and its implementation has been entrusted to the EUIPO.

At COP16, the EUIPO will play a key role in the EU pavilion, actively contributing to set up and organise three side-events focused on sustainable coffee, cocoa, and meat production. These events will highlight the crucial role that certain IP rights, such as geographical indications (GIs), play in strengthening local value chains and promoting sustainability.

The event contributes to expected result 2: Improved capacities of the productive sector, particularly SMEs and the scientific-academic, technological and agricultural sectors, regarding the management of IPRs (including GIs) to obtain value from innovation.

The EUIPO, as implementing agency of the EU-funded IP cooperation project AL-INVEST Verde IPR, will continue to organise similar events/activities in the region for the benefit of users.
